Charles Darwin’s masterpiece, “On the Origin of Species”, shook society to its core on publication in 1859. Darwin was only too aware of the storm his theory of evolution would provoke but he would surely have raised an incredulous eyebrow at the controversy still raging a century and a half later. Evolution is accepted as scientific fact by all reputable scientists and indeed theologians, yet millions of people continue to question its veracity. In “The Greatest Show on Earth”, Richard Dawkins takes on creationists, including followers of ‘Intelligent Design’ and all those who question the fact of evolution through natural selection. Like a detective arriving on the scene of a crime, he sifts through fascinating layers of scientific facts and disciplines to build a cast-iron case: from the living examples of natural selection in birds and insects; the ‘time clocks’ of trees and radioactive dating that calibrate a timescale for evolution; the fossil record and the traces of our earliest ancestors; to confirmation from molecular biology and genetics. All of this, and much more, bears witness to the truth of evolution. “The Greatest Show on Earth” comes at a critical time: systematic opposition to the fact of evolution is now flourishing as never before, especially in America. In Britain and elsewhere in the world, teachers witness insidious attempts to undermine the status of science in their classrooms. Richard Dawkins provides unequivocal evidence that boldly and comprehensively rebuts such nonsense. At the same time he shares with us his palpable love of the natural world and the essential role that science plays in its interpretation. Written with elegance, wit and passion, it is hard-hitting, absorbing and totally convincing.

If only there was …
If only there was medication you could take for being stupid! But alas Pointy, looks like you are doomed to remain a half wit!
I feel for you! Perhaps you can move to your favorite US state and at least you will blend in with the crowd!
Oh I am sorry! I …
Oh I am sorry! I guess I was wrong in presuming you do not believe in god Pointy! Again I stand corrected! You fit the half wit army perfectly!
You do know I hope that there is medication you can take if you hear voices in your head?
Idiot, that’s the …
Idiot, that’s the way things go, not in a straight line.
And I several …
And I several times gave you the figures
2007 Gallup poll- # 24% of Americans believe that both the theory of evolution and the theory of creationism are probably or definitely true
# 41% believe that creationism is true, and that evolution is false!
And the report adds “But, based on an analysis of the two side-by-side questions asked this month about evolution and creationism, it appears that a substantial number of Americans hold these conflicting views.
He said “some 40%”! 43% IS some 40%
Now if only you …
Now if only you could learn to interpret polls…you would realize that that 25% is actually 1% up from 2007.
LOL Obviously we …
LOL Obviously we are!
Did you have any contribution to make other than stating the blindingly obvious?
Because if yes, feel free to join the fray!
I’ve just spoken to …
I’ve just spoken to God again, and he says it’s Ok to tell you to use your noggin. He’s sending you this message:
“Get ye, oh one with mind of tiny quivering morsel, get thee to the abode I have provided for my disobedient Servant Dawkins, and look ye there, at the Chapter 2 bit “
It’s very …
It’s very ecouraging that you arenow differentiating between my opinion and the facts I present.
gallup resutls do IN FACT show that only 25% are non believers in Evolution. That’s good. It’s way down. Creationism hasnot reduced in that same way. Baby steps, its a saltatory developmental process
However, Dawkins figure of 40 % was stated without showing who goves that 40 % figure, and nobody here has found such a figure so far, for that time period. He seems to have equivocated it for us.
And I pointed out …
And I pointed out that you interpreted that equivocation and that it could also be taken as two separate statements and that either way he was factually correct! You then claimed he wasn’t!
It is you who’s methods could and have been questioned and shown up to be below par!
See! Not only am I using my noggin! I am using it well!
:D
Since I am broke …
Since I am broke and consequently didn’t get the book yet, I couldn’t possibly say anything on what you claim he states but just surmising and just because I like arguing I would think he was speaking of them genetically not reverting to wolfish maybe?
so this way of …
so this way of writing believe as bleeve, is there something significant about your spelling? I notice you use that same incorrect spelling every time?
Aside from that…what you just posted is your opinion and since there is no more reason to assume your tactic would work better than his I do not intent to argue who is correct! All’s I can say is a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do and that gioes for women too!
I WOULD however advise you to look up the meaning of jihad!
He’s going to admit …
He’s going to admit it, in the end, I suppose, but not until he sells some books.
He’s barking up the …
He’s barking up the wrong tree. First they can adopt Evolution, then they will be ready to go further.
the Jihadist mentality of Dawkins will not allow that the natural progression is happening. He paints those who bleeve both in evolution and God, as tricksters, They irritate him, instead of encouraging him.
In the book, he …
In the book, he claims that dogs gone feral “revert” to village dogs, rather than wolfish creatures.
Problem with logic:
the apron stings to civilization were not cut. Only by taking the dogs where there is no town, would the results shown , “non reverting to wolfish”, be conclusive
I claimed he was …
I claimed he was using equivocation fallacy by translating 40 % non beievers in Evolution, into 40 % Young Earth ( or less than 10,000yrs) believers.
and that seems TRUE. He arrived by equivocation. I never did say that it was not 40 %, or even 60 % .pleae use your noggin…. I questioned his method af arrival, which is by equivocation
Geez, you guys …
Geez, you guys still going at it?
Or what many non …
Or what many non religious Americans think is the theory of evolution for that matter! ;D
And once again, the …
And once again, the point was whether Dawkins’ statement was incorrect because THAT is what you came on here claiming!
You have been proven wrong so give it up already!
Now if you want to have a discussion on what the “religious” actually believe IS the theory of evolution, get back to me after you’ve had some sleep! You will need it to deal with the breakdown of your fantasy regarding American beliefs!
You seem to be …
You seem to be offering that it matters, if the person can say who formed theories or who they are associated with.
It wouldn’t matter if Joe Blow offered the theory. It’s whether or not they accept the concept of Evolution !
The point is not …
The point is not what the religious are incorporating in their anyway already contradictory belief system!
The point is that you claim Dawkins made a factually incorrect statement and I have proven with facts and numbers that his statement IS correct!
And that makes it pretty clear who is the one living in denial here Pointy! Go get some sleep dear!
Bed time for you …
Bed time for you Pointy! You are losing typing ability and more importantly started writing complete gibberish!
Now I explained twice the issue with that 2009 poll as compared to the 1982 through to 2007 polls! Try your expert again if you still don’t get it!
either the …
either the religious are incorporating it, or not.
Gallup 2009 PROVES it. Deny it all you like. That won’t be a new mode of behaviour for you.
my statement is …
my statement is based on 20009 gallup results.
it’ does not require belief ,in it’s correctness, my statement..
either the 2009 Gallup showing that the religiousare accepting Evolution so that less than 25 are young earthers, or Gallup is wrong.
In fact I will not …
In fact I will not even get into your now professed belief that “it really doesn’t matter that the religious may simultaneously hold views that are in conflict with each other”!
Is that your way of …
Is that your way of saying you were proven wrong and Dawkins’ statement was proven to be correct but you just prefer to live in fantasy land regarding the views of almost half the American population?
Okay, apology accepted Pointy!
