It’s survival of the smartest, so you’ll only waste money if you don’t understand this.
Most Pay-Per-Click advertising networks offer related phrases surrounding your keywords, so it’s best to make use of them. There’s also WordTracker, which helps you to expand your keywords and other possibilities. Also, if you’re able to use negative keywords, do so. Google AdWords includes an option for you to specify which ones should not be used in your particular campaign.
Looking at the downside, there is always the potential for your competitors to click on your ads just so you have to pay. The more money that comes out of your pocket, the better for them, right? Also, PPC pricing structures can turn out to be costly long-term, so it is generally only a short-term solution.
