Reading the World: The State of International Publishing (4/6)
October 28, 2010 - Over the past few years, the world of book publishing has gone through a lot of changes: the rise in popularity of ebooks, the decline of both Borders and Barnes & Noble, the impact of the financial crisis on author advances, the impact of the financial crisis on advertising budgets, the radical decimation of book-review sections in newspapers, the advent of online review sources.
Putting some of these trends into a global context, Yana Genova (NextPage Foundation), Steve Dolph (Spanish translator, publisher of CALQUE), and Chad W. Post (publisher of Open Letter Books) will discuss the future of publishing literature in translation here and abroad. Sharing statistics, anecdotes, and translation excerpts, these three young publishing people will examine the state of international publishing today, touching on the difficulties associated with publishing translations, the advantages afforded by new models of publishing, and possibilities of what the future might hold.
(This event is hosted by Open Letter and University of Rochester Arts & Sciences. It is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.)
