Derek Blasberg in CLASSY: The Book Tour
In April of 2010, I released “Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady.” The book is a collection of humorous essays about etiquette and social interactions, and soon after it was published it was certified a New York Times best seller.
To help promote the book, after Chloe Sevigny, Lauren Santo Domingo and Dasha Zhukova hosted a launch party in New York, I went on a 10-city, three-week book tour around the country, hocking CLASSY all over town and asking (begging?) my friends to host signings and book parties along the way. Thus, in chronological order, here you see me stumble upon Tinsley Mortimer in Boston, Nate Berkus in Chicago, Chloe Sevigny and Karlie Kloss in St. Louis, Barbara Bush in Dallas, Byrdie Bell in Greenwich, Maggie Rizer in San Francisco and, finally, Nicole Richie and Kate Bosworth at the Missoni store in LA with Margherita Missoni. Also, along the way, I had two birthday parties, hosted a black-tie fundraiser for the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis (my hometown! Yay!), and showed face for a few photo shoots and a few morning shows.
Needless to say, the entire tour was invigorating and exciting and completely exhausting. At nearly every stop, my friends and (occasionally) my family would document these moments on a FlipCam, which the wonderful Lyle Maltz cut into the video we see here. I adore this video because it is crammed with so many friends, so many memories, and so many great moments that celebrate a book I had so much fun putting together.
Special thanks to the fine friends I mention above, all of whom met me on the road out of their own free will. In addition, I want to thank Lyle Maltz, the generous folks at Gilt Groupe, Style.com’s Dirk Standen, Penguin’s Ben Schrank and Casey McIntyre, and the wonderful Laura Schechter (who goes by Lauren Oliver in literary circles).
And oh yeah, my parents, Bill and Carol Blasberg. My Dad didn’t particularly like me calling him “thrifty” in my book, so allow me to say, for the record, Bill Blasberg is a free-spending, Harley-owning, Hummer-driving, extravagant and fabulous father. Love you, Dad!
