Annas Edge is a moving, and often humorous, tale of one womans quest for love, happiness and personal fulfillment. It takes us through two continents and two incredibly different cultures, seamlessly blending the sunny optimism of Mexico with the lingering oppressiveness of the Czech Republic. Anna, an artist and English teacher, arrives in the Czech Republic after living in Mexico for more than two years. But just when she thought shed left Mexico behind, then came the river.
Anna rents a flat in a 600-year-old building overlooking the Vltava River and the medieval Charles Bridge. After settling in, Anna climbs into the garden and sits on the bank of the river, which over time comes to speak to her. It wants to know why she came to Prague, it wants to know about Mexico, it wants the whole story, and it wont take no for an answer.
Soon we hear of Annas day job in Prague as an English teacher, one that she doesnt like at all. She misses her life as an artist. At those times she sits next to the river and tells it about Mexico, about that first day of July in San Miguel de Allende when she met Antonio, the drive down to southern Mexico and her little blue apartment in Oaxaca with brilliant blue skies. But soon she awakens to find herself back in the damp and dreary and beautiful Prague, rushing off to another English lesson, far away from that life. The novel sends us back and forth between Prague and Mexico. Anna moves once again, this time to Mexico City with her knight in shining armor, Antonio, rescuing her from the poverty of Oaxaca. But something terrible happens. Anna continues telling the story and her paintings come to life, come into her dreams, taunt her, and pull her into the river. Its so hard to sleep. She cant stop remembering.
